What should you ask guests at check-out?
Ask for a few simple things: leave by the stated time, switch off lights and air conditioning, close windows and doors, take out the rubbish you named and leave the keys where you agreed. Send the instructions the day before departure and keep them visible in the house or in the digital guide.
Is it fair to ask guests to clean at check-out?
Usually no: cleaning is the host’s job, or the cleaner’s, especially when the guest pays a cleaning fee. It is reasonable to ask for small gestures such as taking out the rubbish or putting the dishes in the dishwasher, but a request for a deep clean can worsen the stay and the reviews.
A check-out checklist to copy
Six lines are enough. The time is the one you wrote in the listing. The rest is closing the house, not cleaning it. Replace the square brackets. The English version has the same lines in the same order.
- Leave by the stated time.
- Switch off the lights and the air conditioning.
- Close the windows and the doors.
- Take out the rubbish you named. Colours and days are in waste sorting for guests.
- Put the dishes in the dishwasher and start it, if there is one. This is optional.
- Leave the keys where you agreed.
The text below is there to copy into the message, the house manual or the guide. There is no file to download.

CHECK-OUT Time: by [time] Before you leave: 1. Switch off the lights and the air conditioning. 2. Close the windows and lock the doors. 3. Take out the rubbish we listed. 4. If there is a dishwasher, load the dishes and start it. 5. Leave the keys at [place]. If something broke or does not work, write to us: [contact] Thank you, and safe travels.
What not to ask
Cleaning the house is yours, or your cleaner’s. That is even more true when the guest has already paid a cleaning fee: asking them to redo the house feels like a second job, and someone leaving in a hurry will not do it well.
- A deep clean of the bathroom, the kitchen and the floors.
- Laundry: sheets in the washing machine, hung up or folded.
- Hoovering the whole house.
Small gestures, on the other hand, are fair to ask: rubbish, windows, dishes in the dishwasher. Write them in advance, so they are not a surprise at the door. The departure line sits with the others in the holiday rental house rules template, in the same tone.
How to tell guests
Check-out instructions for guests work when they arrive before the morning of departure, and when they stay visible for anyone who did not read the message.
- The day before: a short message with the time and the six lines. Nothing else.
- By the door: the short sign, below. Someone walking out sees it without opening their phone.
- In the guide: in the holiday home welcome book the check-out line is short. This page is the full list. Guests find it again in the digital guest guide, from the QR code, even if they lost the message.
In the house manual the same list is the check-out checklist for an Airbnb stay: one text, not a different one for every channel. If you list elsewhere too, you paste the same lines.
In LOQY the check-out instructions live with the house rules, on the Free plan: one property, the basic information and the QR code, with no credit card. Pro costs €10 a month or €90 a year, VAT excluded, with a 7-day trial and no card: if you do not add a card, you return to Free. On Pro the guide is translated into the languages you turn on, and the sign can stay just in Italian and English. For several properties with dedicated onboarding, write to support@loqy.info and ask for a custom quote.
- Create your account and the page. The Free plan covers one property and the QR code, with no credit card.
- Write the time and the six lines in the rules section.
- Download the QR code as a PDF and put it next to the sign.
- When you change the time, you update the guide. The printed QR code stays the same.
The sign, to copy
The check-out sign is the short version, to hang by the door. There is no file to download: you copy the text and, if you want a sheet, you print it yourself. Italian and English, side by side.

Frequently asked questions
- What time should check-out be?
- You set the time, and you write it in the listing, the rules and the guide. Many holiday homes use 10am or 11am, so there is time to prepare the house for whoever arrives next. If a guest has an early train, you can agree it beforehand: the exception belongs in the message, not on the sign.
- How do you remind guests about check-out?
- Send the instructions the day before, with the time and the few things to do. In the house, keep the sign by the door and the same list in the guide, so anyone who did not read the message still finds it. Three places, one text.
- Can I ask guests to strip the beds?
- You can ask it as a small gesture, if you write it in advance and you do not present it as cleaning. Stripping the beds is not redoing the house: washing, hoovering and cleaning the bathroom stay with you or with whoever cleans, especially when the guest paid a cleaning fee. If you do not need it, do not ask.
